Cat Vaccinations

Cat Vaccinations in Prosper, TX

Dr. Chris Tucker

What vaccines are recommended for my cat?

There are a number of vaccines for cats. Like for our dogs, we tend to follow a very conservative vaccination protocol, and we take into account the lifestyle of the cat. In our area, Prosper, most cats are indoors only. This reduces the number of available vaccinations. We use a particular pure rabies vaccine that requires administration once every year.

We also recommend vaccinating for RCP, which stands for rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. These are different viral respiratory diseases. That vaccination is administered every three years after the first year of age. We recommend these two vaccines for all cats.

As kittens, we also vaccinate for leukemia. We administer an initial vaccine followed by a booster a month later, and then at a year, the American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends it be boosted again, and that's for all cats. If they're indoors, there's no indication to continue vaccinating for feline leukemia. If they are outdoor cats, then that vaccination is recommended on an annual basis for the entire life of the pet.
